ELLM 6130 Diversity in the Children’s and Young Adult Literature


An exploration of diverse literature for children and young adults from grades P-12. Emphasis is placed on selection, reading, analyzing, evaluating, and using literature to complement a culturally responsive curriculum and developing a deeper knowledge of the issues surrounding representation of diversity in children’s and young adult literature. Candidates complete weekly readings of diverse books, examine depictions of various cultures in texts, learn strategies for selecting and evaluating titles, and examine the roles of bias, power, and privilege in children’s and YA literature in order to develop a diverse collection of materials for the classroom and library.
