CCJ 2990 Sociology of Race and Law

This course provides an overview of the relationship among race, racism and the law throughout the history of the United States. Students will learn about the social construction of race, racism within the US legal and immigration systems and the impact of racial discrimination on US society in areas including access to education, health care, housing, patterns of migration, and equal treatment in the criminal justice system. Attempts to overcome racial inequality, such as the Civil Rights Movement, subsequent racial justice such as the American Indian Movement and the Chicano Movement and the Affirmative Action Programs will also be discussed. The course will conclude with a discussion of the current racial hierarchy and the impact of the racial ideology of colorblindness on racial inequality. Course offered every third semester.
