WGS 3260 Women in Modern Japanese Literature


This course examines the portrayal of women, gender, and sexuality in contemporary Japanese culture and society. Drawing on literary genres from the traditional to manga art and animé creations, the course explores such universal topics as notions of the self, national and gender identity, colonialism, war and its atomic aftermath, sexual liberation, globalism, and aging in Japan’s modern period (1868 - present). What Japanese writers have learned from and transmitted to Japan’s regional neighbors and world literature and how the concerns of the global women’s movement have manifested themselves in Japanese literature are major focii of discussion.
