ASN 3490 Southeast Asia in World Politics

Southeast Asia is a region of great diversity encompassing democracies and dictatorships; a city-state and a vast archipelago; rich states and poor; the world’s most populous Muslim country, one of the largest Catholic nations, and one of the newest nations (East Timor); and ancient civilizations. It is also a region of great economic and strategic importance: the scene of fast-growing states and of the United States’ longest war. This course examines colonial legacies, nationalist and revolutionary movements, and big power interests in order to understand the foreign policy of regional states and the role of external powers.
