MUSI 5710 Jazz Performance, and Improvisation Techniques for Music Educators


This course is designed for working music educators who are not jazz musicians but whose jobs focus at least in part on jazz education and jazz-related subjects. Students will learn the art of teaching jazz improvisation through peer- and self-teaching, and will undertake a study of common jazz forms, evolution of jazz improvisation styles, jazz articulation, phrasing and vocabulary. A portion of the class will be devoted to creating a performance ensemble via the class complement, giving students first-hand experience in creating this music. Prerequisite(s): Undergraduate music degree or permission of music department
