ECSP 3020 Family, School, and Community Support


This online course addresses family-professional partnerships and school and community supports in early childhood education settings with particular attention to the issues of diverse families. Collaboration, consultation, communication, team work, home and school partnerships, and system coordination are key elements of focus.  The importance of transition (e.g., early intervention to preschool, grade to grade) and the necessity for understanding the transition needs of families and their children with special needs will be addressed. Teacher candidates will understand the multi-faceted nature of families as well as the possible challenges and solutions to creating home, school and community connections. Teacher candidates will gain the knowledge, skills and dispositions to work collaboratively with diverse families in a culturally responsive manner. Contemporary issues such as developing comprehensive school and community supports for today’s families, immigration, and grandparents raising grandchildren, military families, homelessness, inclusion, and the role of home languages will be examined.
