HIST 3570 Late Antiquity and the Byzantine Empire

This course begins with an examination of the Roman Empire between the reigns of Diocletian and Justinian, including late Roman history and culture, the rise of Christianity, and the disintegration of the Empire in the west. The remainder of the course follows the tumultuous history of the Byzantine Empire from Justinian’s death to the fall of Constantinople; in addition to the evolution of Byzantine state, society, culture, and religion, emphasis is placed upon interaction between the Byzantine Empire and neighboring peoples.
