SWK 2010 Introduction to Social Work

This course provides an overview of the social work profession.  Students will learn about: social work careers, licensure, the NASW Code of Ethics, an overview of the major social problems that social work seeks to ameliorate, the historical development of the field and the system of social programs that social workers coordinate in the United States and in New Jersey. This course serves as the portal to the Bachelor’s in Social Work program (BSW), for which the Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice is seeking accreditation from the Council for Social Work Education (CSWE).  In accordance with CSWE guidelines, our curriculum follows the 2015 Education Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) for accreditation of baccalaureate programs.  EPAS standards stipulate integration of nine competencies into the curriculum.  This course will begin assisting students in developing the first three: demonstrating ethical and professional behavior, engaging in diversity and difference in practice, and advancing human rights and social, economic and environmental justice.
