PHIL 3600 Fashion: Philosophical Approaches

This course aims at examining fashion from a philosophical perspective with a focus on technology. Far from thinking of fashion just as an object, the course explores the meaning of fashion as a verb, as in the case of “fashioning oneself”. Focusing on the performative aspects of fashion encourages a discussion on the role of fashion in society and specifically in relation to media and technology. It explores questions pertaining to the ethics of fashion technology and the ways in which technology aids its aesthetic presentation. Particular attention will be given to fashion and bodily and social identity and their portrayal through technology. This course encourages the students to think of fashion in relation to their own identity, the technology they use (especially social media) and the society they live in, allowing them to engage in critical reflection on the tech-based communicative acts made thanks and through fashion choices. This course is Technology Intensive.
