ECON 4400 Applied Data Analysis

This course first provides an in-depth, hands-on treatment of the analysis and presentation of economic data in numerical and graphical form (measures of location, measures of dispersion, scatter diagrams, line charts, bar charts, pie charts, etc.). Subsequent topics are the construction of confidence intervals, hypothesis testing for population means and variances, analysis of variance techniques, linear regression analysis including extensions of the Ordinary Least Squares regression model necessitated by violations of standard assumptions, logistic regression, forecasting, and decision making under uncertainty and risk. The course includes ethical considerations such as biased samples, misleading presentation of data, etc. Emphasis will be placed on the application of relevant software (e.g., Microsoft Excel) to carry out the covered techniques.
