CIED 2400 History of Modern Education This course introduces students to the discipline of history by exploring the development and uses of education in the context of the formation of the modern world from the 18th century to the present. It traces how educational ideas, institutions, and policies interacted with political, economic, social, and cultural developments among the principal regions of the world - Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Americas - from the Atlantic Revolutions and their aftermath to our contemporary era. Topics include: how historians study history, and the impact of the Enlightenment, Atlantic Revolutions, Industrialization, “New” Imperialism, Nationalism, Cold War, and globalization on educational ideas, institutions, and policies. This course meets the UCC Area 3B: Historical Perspectives requirement.
