ASN 2850 Yoga Traditions and Practices This course will examine the historical roots, philosophical traditions, and contemporary practices of yoga. We will explore the historical and philosophical roots of yoga as it developed in ancient India, then trace the development of yoga branches in the United States and other western societies. In addition to studying of the philosophical and historical traditions of yoga, this course incorporates experiential components, introducing students to basic postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation exercises. A selection of classical and contemporaries sources will guide our explorations of yoga’s history, philosophy, and postures. No prior yoga experience is required.
