CCJ 2510 Drugs and Criminal Justice

Drug use, distribution, and other drug-related crime are a key focus of the criminal justice system. Using criminology and drug policy research this course examines the relationship between drugs and crime in the United States. The class will assess and evaluate the history of drug laws, current drug policies, and the impact of drug-related arrests, convictions, and punishment on individuals, communities, and society at large. The class will examine drug markets, international and global drug trafficking, and the strategies of drug control used by other countries and how they impact domestic approaches. Students are introduced to the physiological effects of drug use to understand the impact of addiction on criminal behavior, and the role of the criminal justice system in drug use prevention and treatment programs, such as drug courts, is discussed.
