CIED 2500 Schools and Communities This course introduces students to the role of the PreK-12 school in the local, state, national and global communities. As part of the course, students will be pursue a substitute teaching license and introduced to other non- or pre-certification employment opportunities in schools, such as substitute teaching, paraprofessional, alternative route teaching, and teaching at independent, parochial, or charter schools. The class will explore topics related to the broader educational landscape, such as: political, social, and legal contexts of schooling, the role of communal organizations and school boards, state and national standards, local and national assessment data, educational inequalities, and educational policies such as charter schools and vouchers. The focus will be on the multiple roles that educators play and how they interact with the local, state, national, and global communities. Students will leave the course with non-certification and pre-certification credentials to work in area schools.
