CIEC 3400 Teaching and Learning Mathematics in Early Childhood This course examines content and pedagogy for teaching mathematics in preschool through third grade. Teacher candidates will develop a deep understanding of the content standards and practices outlined in the Preschool Teaching and Learning Standards and the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (K-grade 3). Using the framework of cognitively guided instruction (Carpenter and Fennema, 1992), candidates will explore the informal mathematical knowledge that children come to school with and will learn how to build upon that knowledge in developmentally appropriate ways. By designing problem solving situations and encouraging children to talk and write about their solution ideas, candidates will learn to value the multiple problem solutions that children construct. Effective strategies for assessing student learning and addressing identified needs will prepare candidates to support the learning of every child.
