POL 5700 Immigration Policy

This course will examine immigration policy in historical and cross-national perspective. The course will investigate key topics in the study of contemporary immigration. We will begin by studying the development of immigration policy, beginning with the early days of the Republic and focusing on crucial historical periods in the late 19th, early 20th, and mid-20th century. We will then assess the extent to which policy choices have affected access to citizenship and contributed to various pathways of incorporation for immigrant groups based on their gender, national origin, race and ethnic background. We will focus on the various modes of incorporation of immigrants both in the United States and in other immigrant destinations. Finally, we will analyze the impact of urban geography and local policy on the experiences of immigrants in the United States and across the world.
