ARTH 1010 Understanding Art A course for non-art majors introducing them to both the history and practice of visual art. Emphasis is placed on building visual literacy via studio projects contextualized through art history, leading to a greater understanding of the artistic process. Course content and projects may address a variety of visual media across historical periods, including painting, sculpture, architecture, graphic arts, and photography. The course encourages student engagement with both the process of artistic creation and with works of historical and contemporary art via University Galleries and New York City museums. No prior artistic experience is necessary.
UCC Area D (Creativity) Course Objectives: Explore creativity as a fundamental aspect of human expression; analyze, synthesize, and develop creative projects reflecting an understanding and appreciation of the creative process. Credits: 3.0
