ENV 1100 Introduction to Environmental Sustainability This course provides an interdisciplinary introduction to environmental sustainability, integrating perspectives from biology, chemistry, geology, political science, economics, and ethics. It emphasizes a holistic understanding of environmental systems, focusing on key topics such as ecosystems, energy, water and air resources, pollution, environmental law, population dynamics, urbanization, and human health. The course also covers sustainability-related policy, economics, and ethics, encouraging students to critically engage with the challenges and opportunities in creating sustainable societies. Laboratory and field components complement lecture material, offering hands-on experiences such as ecological sampling, analysis of the water cycle, and topographic map studies. The course fosters a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between natural and human systems, equipping students with the knowledge to address environmental challenges.
UCC Area H (Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: Natural Sciences) Course Objectives: Explore and engage in processes, techniques, and strategies that foster curiosity, promote inquiry, and yield well-reasoned conclusions and solutions concerning humans and the world they live in. Students will be charged an additional Env Science Lab Fee when enrolling in this course. Credits: 4.0
