LANG 1120 Understanding Human Language

This course introduces students to the core concepts of linguistics, the study of human language. Course content includes examination of the building blocks of spoken language (sounds, words, sentences, meaning), as well as its more abstract features (language change, acquisition, and variation). Tools of linguistic reasoning and analysis are introduced and applied to evaluate language data, draw generalizations, develop hypotheses, and solve problems. Students will explore and compare different approaches to how language is represented in an individual’s mind and in the larger society.

UCC Area G (Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: Behavioral & Social Sciences) Course Objectives: Explore and engage in processes, techniques, and strategies that foster curiosity, promote inquiry, and yield well-reasoned conclusions and solutions concerning humans and the world they live in.
