CIED 2400 History of Modern Education This course introduces students to the history of the role of education in the formation of the modern world from the 18th century to the present. The course centers around the question of whether political elites offered free public education to its subjects and/or citizens to foster individual enlightenment or to impose social control. Students will read and analyze primary and secondary sources offering different perspectives and experiences in education during the modern era related to the central question of the course, and use this evidence to support their own conclusions and ultimately craft their own historical narrative supporting their answer to this question.
