ANTH 3800 Childhood and Social Justice

This course explores children’s experiences of inequality (class, race, gender, sexuality, and ability) in order to participate in current debates concerning children and childhood. Grounded in the field of critical childhood studies, the course provides students with knowledge to critically assess current policies, practices, and discourses that shape the meanings, conceptions, and lived experiences of children in various parts of the world. The course will allow students to explore how children’s perspectives are ignored in various fields such as law, medicine, education, and social work, and how including their experiences can contribute to social justice.

UCC Area K (Identities & Inequalities) Course Objectives: Explore and critically analyze social identities and inequalities, their intersectionalities, and the impacts of persisting inequities across cultural contexts.
