CIEC 3800 Supporting Language and Literacy Development for Diverse Learners


Adaptation and increased accessibility to literacy to meet the varied learning needs of every student requires careful and intentional planning in how instruction is delivered and, in the selection, and adaptation of materials used. In this course candidates will deepen their understanding of how to organize and analyze data gathered from formal and informal assessment tasks. This course will accompany clinical practice II during the second half of a year-long clinical experience in P-3 classrooms. Inclusive literacy strategies for students with disabilities; multilingual learners, neurodivergent learners and students with other learning needs (“struggling” and reluctant readers and writers, students with language and communication needs) will be examined and practiced. Topics will include differentiation, multisensory approaches, integrating assistive technology, apps to support learning at home, collaboration with specialists and families, data-driven instruction, monitoring progress and adjusting lesson plans.
