CIEE 3420 Foundations of Literary Development This course provides Teacher Candidates a basis for understanding current research, theory, and practice related to developing the pedagogical content knowledge and conceptual framework for teaching foundational reading skills, including concepts of print, phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and oral language comprehension. Teacher candidates will examine methods to assess development in these key areas, and explore how to identify, and address, reading difficulties related to reading mechanics and/or language comprehension. Analysis of the influence of cultural, linguistic, socioeconomic, and individual factors on students’ literacy development will allow Teacher Candidates to consider effective and appropriate teaching materials and approaches for diverse learners. Prerequisite(s): Meet all requirements to progress in the professional education sequence: requirements include completion of 60 or more credits, a GPA of 3.0 or above and CIED 2120 Credits: 3.0
