CIEE 3440 Interdisciplinary Literacy for Social Justice This course is designed for pre-service teacher-candidates who are working with or will be working with students in an elementary classroom setting. The course takes an interdisciplinary approach to literacy, focusing on content areas including social studies, science, and the arts. Using writing, reading, and discourse, students explore frameworks for understanding interlocking systems of social oppression, including race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, disability, and others, as these systems relate to teaching and learning in today’s schools. Teacher candidates actively examine how reading multicultural, multilingual, and diverse literature, writing from diverse perspectives, and discourse pedagogical approaches might engage students with social justice topics and issues. Candidates will develop, implement, and analyze curriculum and instruction through a social justice lens to ensure students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds can access the curriculum. Prerequisite(s): Meet all requirements to progress in the professional education sequence: requirements include completion of 60 or more credits, a GPA of 3.0 or above.
