GEO 1100 GIS 1: Spaces and Places

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is a software package used to analyze and present spatial data in map format. During this introductory course, students will learn the basics of industry-standard GIS software, build a geodatabase and share their results. Students will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to research their projects, specifically focusing on strong AI prompts and GeoAI, during the data collection process, background research, summary production and in writing final information blocks for display maps. Students will gain the ability to check all results: AI results will be evaluated for accuracy and corrected, while map results will be analyzed for ethical standards of data manipulation. By the end of this course, students will have a portfolio demonstrating their skills: ability to create simple maps using GIS, understanding the principles of cartography, distinguishing between types of data and how to locate them, and using AI responsibly and ethically throughout their projects.
