CDSJ 2250 Race, Gender, and Social Justice

The course will examine the formation of social identities such as those based on ‘race’, ethnicity, sex, gender, sexuality, class, ability, and/or nation through concepts of belonging, identification, and boundary-making. Forms of social inequalities linked to identities will be interrogated as forms of power and systemic oppression such as racism, genderism, patriarchy, heterosexism, transphobia, class exploitation, ablism, xenophobia, and environmental injustice. Cases from different contexts (local, national, global) will illustrate impacts of inequalities in intersectional ways. The course will evaluate theories of social justice and synthesize ideas of individual and group agency, strategies of resistance, and visions for change and solidarity.
