ECSP 3020 Family, School, and Community Support


This course addresses family-professional partnerships and school and community supports in early childhood education settings with particular attention to the issues of families whose children have special needs. Collaboration, consultation, communication, team work, home and school partnerships, and system coordination are key elements of focus. The importance of transistion (e.g., early intervention to preschool, grade to grade) and the necessity for understanding the particular needs of all families during the transistion process willl be addressed. Teacher candidates will understand the multi-faceted nature of families as well as the possible challenges and solutions to creating home, school and community connections. Teacher candidates will gain the knowlege, skills and dispositions to work collaboratively with diverse families in a culturally responsive manner. Contemporary issues such as developing comprehensive school and community supports for families, immigration, grandparents raising grandchildren, homelessness, inclusion, the role of home languages and the impact of poverty will be addressed. Prerequisite(s): CIEC 3000
