MUSI 2160 World Music This course is an introduction to the discipline of ethnomusicology through readings of and listenings to selected music from locations such as Africa, Indonesia, the Islamic World, India, Latin America and Eastern Europe. Attention will be focused on traditional and classical musics but varoius popular music that cmbines aspects of Western popular sounds with non-Western traditional cultures will also receive attention. Emphasis will be on analytical questions ( how is music put together?), but social questions (what role does music serve?/how is the music conceived by the people who make it and its primary audience?) will also be included.
