DIS 4090 Disability Global Society Individuals with disabilities are estimated to make up about 15% of the world population, but they are often among the most marginalized in society. According to the World Bank, 20% of the world’s poorest people have disabilities, and 80 % of all persons with disabilities live in developing countries (UN Enable, 2009). The passage of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) in 2006 represented a major advance in addressing the marginalization of individuals with disabilities in developing countries, but that work is not done. The intent of this interdisciplinary course in Disability Studies is to serve as an overview of the social, behavioral, political, and cultural construct of disability across the global society through the lens of the ongoing implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities worldwide.
