ANTH 3330 Environmental Anthropology

This course uses an anthropological perspective of the complex interactions between humans and their environments and illustrates how humans have been an active component of Earth’s ecology for many thousands of years. Using archaeological and ethnographic approaches, we explore past and current relationships, and their effects on the environment, human populations, and other species on earth. By using traditional ecological knowledge, anthropology focuses on cultural traditions, cultural identity, and factual knowledge of the past and present use of environmental resources to understand sustainable and non-sustainable resource management, technological advances, and accelerated human impacts. The anthropological perspective offers an understanding of successful and unsuccessful interactions in the past, to help us address issues today and plan toward our future. This is a UCC area 6 course.
