ANTH 1000 Community and Power: Intro to Social Justice Studies

Communities have long been sites of oppression while at the same time focal points for social justice struggles. In this course, students will explore how communities navigate injustice through the analysis of specific case studies of struggles (health care, housing, work, education, environment, policing). Students will analyze the root causes of injustices in the structures of power using various disciplinary perspectives, and acquire skills of listening and representing the diversity of voices in communities. Experiential learning activities and advocacy projects will prepare students to work with and for communities, become agents of social change and shape public debates. By the end of this course, students will be able to address problems of interest, and to articulate the stakes of the course material for their everyday lives, careers, politics, and public culture.
