CCJ 4820 Evidence-Based Crime Policy This capstone course bridges students’ knowledge of criminal justice institutions, theory, research, and data analysis and applies it to “real world” scenarios. It explores how policies and practices within the criminal justice system and related institutions are developed, informed by, and assessed using empirical research methods, resulting in evidence-based decisions. Students will explore the key research methodologies behind these assessments, understand how to interpret findings and outcomes, be able to evaluate such policies for themselves, and discuss the potential and pitfalls of relying on evidence-based policies. They will gain a comprehensive understanding of how evidence-based approaches to crime and crime control can inform policy reform, enhance community safety, and promote fairness in the criminal justice system. The course gives students the data literacy to understand and evaluate evidence-based programs, preparing them for key roles in the criminal justice, government, and non-profit sectors.
Prerequisite(s): SOC 3020 OR CCJ 3030 with a C- or higher Credits: 3.0
