CIEC 3500 Critical Literacy Across the Content Areas & Assessment This course will examine critical literacy as a culturally responsive, integrated pedagogical approach to teaching critical thinking, and reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in the content areas. Coursework will focus on developing content knowledge and integrating literacy skills for teaching science and social studies to PreK-grade 3 learners using multi-cultural and anti-bias children’s books and texts. Teacher candidates will demonstrate their understanding of the cyclical relationship among planning, instruction, and assessment with consideration to children’s personal, cultural, and community assets, as well readiness, interests, learning styles and accommodations for special needs and English language learners. Teacher candidates will show the ability to design and implement formative and summative assessments and reflect and analyze data from performance-based assessments to inform future teaching and learning.
