CIEC 3600 Language and Literacy in Early Elementary: Grades 1-3 This course provides a comprehensive exploration of early elementary literacy instruction (grades 1-3), grounded in research-based literacy practices. Students will gain a deep understanding of key literacy development components such as phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and reading comprehension. Emphasis is placed on developing effective instructional strategies that support reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in young learners. The course covers formative and summative assessments to monitor literacy progress, with a focus on differentiated instruction to address the diverse needs of students, including struggling and advanced readers. Through lectures, discussions, and hands-on projects, students will build the pedagogical knowledge needed to teach foundational literacy skills and address early reading difficulties. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to apply evidence-based strategies in early literacy education, becoming reflective and adaptable educators prepared to support the diverse needs of young readers.
